Quick roundup before the weekend
- Brooklynvegan ponders band names that sound similar, causing confustion. Not to mention the new novels in paperback, Cloud Atlas and The Cloud Atlas. Sheesh.
- Thursdays mean new a Anti-Hit List, and this week’s edition led me to Party Ben and the excellent mix of Lyrics Born’s "Callin’ Out" with U2’s "Sunday Bloody Sunday". I was too late to the party to hear the mix of Fugazi with Beyonce. I snoozed and I loozed.
- The Sports Guy gives us a behind the scenes look at the American Music Awards, which he wrote for.
Since Suge has been on Jimmy’s show, they said hello and shook hands. Of course, standing next to Suge, a menacing posse member was sizing Jimmy up with one of those "You seem okay, but I still might shoot you" looks. Not exactly a happy vibe in the room when you exchanging unexpected pleasantries with Suge Knight.
- The Dead Milkmen do their first show in 10 years, as tribute to recently deceased bandmate Dave Blood
- At Ed’s Return of the Reluctant, there may be the greatest music article. ever. (On Toto’s "Hold The Line")
Yet in this way, we immediately understand the initial discordant keyboard riff. For what is this but an oblique reference to Mussolini’s trains running on time? Where other bands could have employed a whistle sound effect, Toto lets the music speak for itself. The song needs no flash, save Steve Lukather’s driving guitar solo.
- Scientific American has an intriguing article on how the brain ‘does’ music.
The ear has the fewest sensory cells of any sensory organ–3,500 inner
hair cells occupy the ear versus 100 million photoreceptors in the eye.
Yet our mental response to music is remarkably adaptable; even a little
study can "retune" the way the brain handles musical inputs.
