M. Ward Concert Photos

I have a few photos from the M. Ward show Thursday at the Great American Music Hall. This was the first time I’d seen him with a full backing band (openers Norfolk & Western doing double duty), which gave him a more rambunctious sound. He still did a few solo numbers, opening the concert with astonishing guitar work (Duet For Guitars #3) sure to enrapt concert goes who weren’t already fans. He also shed his band to cover Let’s Dance. He covered songs from his latest, Transistor Radio, along with old favorites. Hi-Fie and Undertaker stood out. Vincent O’Brien may have been better without the backing band – it seemed a little rushed. But this is mere nitpicking, he gave his usual outstanding show, including a (CCR ?) cover for good measure.
The aforementioned Norfolk & Western were a pleasant surprise with lead singer sounding like Dean Wareham at times. Middle act Scout Niblett was also new to me. Her set was a little disjointed as she blew an amp mid-way through. I’m intrigued to see what her recordings sound like. With just herself on guitar and a backing drummer (whom she sometimes replaced) her performance at times reminded me of Nirvana, Portishead and 70’s heavy metal.

I’m heading out in a few minutes to see the San Diego version of this show. I guess to make up for my stupidity at missing the Decemberists last night (brain fart in the extreme) I can take solace in the fact that N&W’s drummer is a former member of the D’ists.
