The Telegraph asks, whatever happened to subversive pop?

What on earth was Green of Scritti Politti doing trying to get
post-structuralism-influenced songs into the charts? People like him
shouldn’t have been pop stars, but they had incredible ambition,
sky’s-the-limit aspirations. Underneath it all, there was a core of
seriousness, so much so that they risked looking ludicrous. I admire
the strenuousness of it all.
