This time of year, I’m prone to thinking of back home. Back home regular readers may know, is Nebraska. They(?) say you can never go home. Once again, I triumph over cliches by, in fact, returning to Omaha for a couple days to rock in the new year and celebrate Christmas with the family. [...]

Recent major label signings by indie poster children The Decemberists and Death Cab For Cutie have launched countless MySpaces contemplating what it means to be indie. Is it a genre, a sound an ethos? Here at BMK, I generally find such talk boring – as it was and always shall be, it’s about the music. [...]

From Sunday’s Times:
After a cease-fire that halted civil war between the ethnic Sinhalese-dominated government and ethnic Tamil insurgents in 2002, the lush, gorgeous island – Sri Lankans compare their country to the Garden of Eden – seemed poised for mass tourism.
And then today’s:
All told, 45 Sri Lankan soldiers, sailors and police officers have died [...]

Temporary exemptions extended to Katrina victims1 are expiring, so many are now facing mortgate and other payments they’ve temporarily been skirting. Thanks to the foresight of our government, we won’t have to worry about freeloaders getting a free pass any longer. Just don’t let Elizabeth Warren dissuade you with her commie rhetoric:
…Wait long enough, [...]

I guess Ben Dover was unavailable for comment.
The military earlier warned it would launch a preemptive measure to put a stop to the MILF activities.

Why the article [bugmenot] does not mention AT&T’s infamous “reach around and touch someone” is beyond me.
Sometimes an ad misses the point, though, like when McDonald’s promoted its double cheeseburger with the pop-talk phrase “I’d hit it,” and only found out once the ads were on TV that that meant “I’d have sex with it.”
Merry Christmas

Now taking bets.
In one corner:
“The legislation in effect deputizes the bankruptcy courts as collection agents for the credit-card companies,” said Mark Sargent, dean of Villanova University’s law school, a bankruptcy expert, and critic of the bill. “The great irony of this is that it’s having your cake and eating it too. They push credit to [...]

Snippet found in response to this otherwise interesting* post on the difference of rappers’ social networks compared to other “media elite”.
Hip-hop and other electronic music genres are largely producer-driven, even though the vocalists’ faces are best known.

* “interesting” being a word I am trying to wean myself from.

Mother Jones profiles BMK favorite Ernie Chambers, long time thorn in the side of Nebraska’s legislature. Here’s a snippet:
Because of Chambers, the Legislature routinely backs bills its members wouldn’t otherwise have dreamed of supporting. He cajoled his colleagues into abolishing corporal punishment in schools, correcting the state pension system so that women would be treated [...]

Day three, just to keep you up to date: the first day I said fuck it and worked from home. Then they announced free breakfast and lunch for the duration of the strike! So day 2 I made sure I found a car service needing a fourth and spent an hour-forty-five with strangers [...]

Back in the motherland, an angler hooked a fish with two mouths. The article includes this semi-disturbing line: “He has plans for the fish, which don’t included mounting.” Three guesses what his plans are (and the first two don’t count).

It was a banner year at BMK, including the addition of the brains of this operation, Dave – a long lost friend who tracked me down via a comment I left at brooklynvegan.com. Go figure. Thusly, in the spirit of looking back, I give to you my latest no thought required “content”, as first seen [...]

As an introductory clause, passed of as matter of record: “Spurred by the iPod revolution“1. I am not sure what is revolutionary about marketing defective products that are doomed to fail…
Which brings me back to my iPod rant. Some of you may know my iPod shuffle recently went kaput. In going to the Apple store [...]

Here’s a pretty good recording of the Bright Eyes concert from Berkeley, CA on February 15th. If not off the soundboard, it’s next best thing, with appropriate levels of audience sound. It was one of the better Bright Eyes concerts I’ve attended. Perhaps because it was Oberst’s birthday and he had some family and other [...]

I just got back from Sanjuro, and turned on the television to be greeted by Barbara Walters asking “Could heaven be a myth? …made up to give our lives meaning?” Should have stayed for the second half of the double feature. I now hear them playing Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven, followed immediately by Mariah [...]
