Instead of Top Tens…

Here’s a pretty good recording of the Bright Eyes concert from Berkeley, CA on February 15th. If not off the soundboard, it’s next best thing, with appropriate levels of audience sound. It was one of the better Bright Eyes concerts I’ve attended. Perhaps because it was Oberst’s birthday and he had some family and other special guests in attendance? Perhaps not. Either way, he’s at his best: lucid, confident and amicable with sufficient backing instrumentation that give the songs some heft without getting bogged down. The “I love yous” were kept to a relative minimum, and the concert itself featured a nice mix of old and new.

My favorite songs from the show were Old Soul Song, Loose Leaves, (previously unlreased) I Must Belong Somewhere1, Lua and True Blue.

Please accept this collection of songs from one of my favorite concerts of the past year in lieu of any Top N-typish lists, which I tend to loathe.

Saddle Creek has released a CD from the tour this show was a leg of. I don’t know whether any of these songs made that compilation. If you like this, I encourage you to buy that record (only available from indpendent record stores or Saddle Creek’s web store). I’ll be picking it up when I hit the big O for New Years.

The songs, tracklisting & additional notes following the break….

  1. At The Bottom of Everything
  2. We Are Nowhere And It’s Now 2
  3. Old Soul Song
  4. Happy Birthday (audience)
  5. Train Under Water
  6. A Scale, A Mirror and Those Indifferent Clocks
  7. Loose Leaves
  8. I Must Belong Somewhere
  9. When The President Talks To God
  10. Method Acting
  11. Poison Oak
  12. Another Travelin’ Song
  13. Landlocked Blues
  14. Lua
  15. True Blue
  16. Road To Joy

Anyway, they’re all here

(I’m hoping Jeff is on the road somewhere sufficiently far away from the internet that this posting won’t give him a nic fit)

1 With a little paring down, this could be a great song (a typical BE criticism, I realize).
2 At the end of We Are Nowhere And It’s Now, he flips off the Skynard requester (these people still exist?!?), who while not specifically requesting Freebird, did get a “free bird”.
