These Days

This time of year, I’m prone to thinking of back home. Back home regular readers may know, is Nebraska. They(?) say you can never go home. Once again, I triumph over cliches by, in fact, returning to Omaha for a couple days to rock in the new year and celebrate Christmas with the family. Admittedly a few days after The Official Holiday, but still quick enough to smoke those slow-ass wise men.

Anywho, a few Nebraska notes:

Despite spending my formative years in the cornhusker state, I learned the folllowing from this article1:

  • There exists a machine enigmatically called a “Manure Spreader”
  • It is possible to get an arm stuck in a Manure Spreader.
  • There is a Nebraska Amputee Golf Association

Anybody care to guess what the article is about? Also, kudos to the writer for not using “stick-to-it-ive-ness”. I’m not sure I could have been so strong.

Along with his best albums & best shows lists, Tim McMahan elegizes, “If ‘04 was the year that Omaha (and indie) broke into the national consciousness, ‘05 was the year that indie (and Omaha) began to run out of steam”. Along the way, he gives a nice rundown of Omaha’s 2005 music scene. While you’re there, enter to win a copy of his annual “best of” mix. Too bad, I’ll be getting to the Big O, one day too late to catch the Darktown House Band revival at Dubliners. So it goes.
