The millenium of aftermath

Inspired by the Onion’s AV Club:

I’m in the mood for love, Louis Prima

  • Working at a coffee shop in Nashville in the late 90’s, many of my co-workers were stereo nazi’s, i.e., their 5 CDs were put on the changer when they came in, protests be damned.  It was right in the heart of the big swing revival, which, in Nashville, also meant that every kid with some pomade was playing rockabilly for tips in dive bars on any given night.  One such kid (who unknowingly outed my roommate to me as a lesbian one evening), also a stereo nazi played a Prima album every shift he came in.  I grew to tolerate it obviously.

They Love Each Other, Grateful Dead (2/15/73)

  • Seems like every hippie chick I knew in college wanted this to be the theme song of their relationship.  So I learned the chord progression and bagged a hippie chick.  Unrelated events; it never became our theme song.  We chose “My One and Only Love“.  Last I heard she lived in the suburbs with a husband and a dog.

Who is it, Talking Heads

  • Though found on their ‘77 album, I only own that on the vinyl I bought in the subway drunk one night for a buck.  This one I got from my fuuture cousin-in-law, who apparently was rather active in bootlegging CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City in the 1970’s and treated me to a live 1975 CBGB’s recording and some other demos from the same year.

Where have all the Good Times Gone, Kinks

  • These were a late find for me.  Early exposure was limited to oldies and classic rock stations, who effectively played only their two greatest hits.  I’ve really become a huge fan of all their stuff in the past few years.

Ancient Chinese Secret Blues, Clem Snide

  • Seeing Clem Snide was the first time I ever saw a show at the new-and-improved Sin-e.  It was a good venue, I’ve got to get back there.  Eef Barzelay was going off that night on Ryan Adams.  Apparently they used to be friends or touring partners or something, but Ryan had done him wrong.  Eef kept on ripping on him being a sellout poseur.  Whatever.

Forgot about Dre, Dre & Eminem

  • This was a gift from a friend who is about as hip-hop edumacated as me.  I think he also gave me a remix of the same tune.  Dre is really defensive in this song, I don’t know who was hating on him, but my heart goes out to him.

Push it Out, Beta Band

  • So they’ve broken up, so be it.  Saw them at the Variety in Atlanta on e shortly after 9/11.  My date and I kept running into her two cohorts that night–first over a cigarette during the show, later over at the yacht club, and still later at the Earl where we faded off into the sunset.  If memory serves, we were close to peak during Push it Out, and we really did just push it all out, and were ok with everything in the world for an evening.

Hurricane, Bob Dylan

  • My friend and I just agreed that Desire and Blood on the Tracks were our favorite Dylan albums, both either recorded or released in the best year ever.  I never saw the movie with Denzel as Rubin Carter, but I did take the ethics portion of the bar exam in Montclair, NJ, which allowed me to pass through Paterson, which then caused me to have the line “In Paterson that’s just the ways things go” running through my head the entire exam.

Wishes for Kisses, Rosebuds

  • This is my favorite song from their first album.  A married couple, but not so gushingly doting as the Mates of State, just nice straight-ahead power pop.  Haven’t bought their latest, but I’ve heard a few tracks to be a bit darker.

Like Like the the the Death, Silver Jews

  • How about that for coincidence.  Seriously not planned.  Read that into your random rules.  Very excited to see their first big tour in a few weeks, even if it is at Webster Hall.  Secretly hoping Malkmus will show up, but not holding my breath.  God, this is a great song…
