In which I copycat Dave. If you want to read me live-blogging an iTunes shuffle session, proceed after the ever mysterious “jump”.

(1) True Blue - Bright Eyes (2005-02-15 Berkeley, CA)

He has to restart the song because he was thinking about something else. Haters hate, but I like it. Meanwhile, the poppers pop and the breakers break.

“I am a blue blood I will amdit that, I live in a blue…oh wait”

I dedicate this song to Jeff - thanks for the tips on San Diego sights.

(2) Just Like A Woman - Bob Dylan & The Band (Before The Flood)

I think I saw that Mr. Z just got a divorce, and Craig Finn wants to be called Robby Robertson, so somehting fishy is going on. I’m pretty sure that I’ll never see Dylan in concert so this live CD will have to suffice. 2 for 2 on concert recordings. I boldly predict Talking Heads up next.

(3) This Is Radio Clash - Clash

So much for my predictive abilities. I like me some Clash a lot, but I think they may be one of the more over-rated bands of all time. This song isn’t changing my mind. I’m gonna cheat and jump over to “Safe European Home”. Ahh, much better.

(4) If You’re Feeling Sinister - Belle and Sebastian

I came “this” close to buying the Electric Company DVD, but I couldn’t quite pull the trigger. I still think of the cartoon everytime I listen to B&S. They’re coming to SF (either with The New Pornographers or Clap Your Hand Say Yeah). I’m guessing a sell out either way. I’ve seen B&S at the Greek theater in Berkely. Silly me didn’t realize how many people were in the band.

(5) The Blues Song - The Dead Milkmen

Before the internet, there was the Dead Milkmen and dammit I love them. Current lyric - “the blues are a product like a computer chip or a tampon”. I see it’s akready almost two year since Dave Blood died. I believe fellow BMK-er Dave gave me my first Dead Milkmen tape (Metaphysical Graffiti) back in high school as part of a secret santa program or something. Still rock that tape.

(6) Doctor’s Orders - Carol Douglas

Talk about 180 degree fliparoos. This song is coming live and direct from the last days of disco soundtrack. Chair dancing ensues.

(7) Bringing Us Down - Les Savy Fav

We now resume our regular musical programming. Last week I saw The Hold Steady at the Casbah in San Diego. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the part of the tour where Les Savy Fav was sharing the stage with the Hold Steady. Beggars can’t be choosers, but I choose to wonder how many levels my mind would have been blown had they been part of an already outstaning show. Perhaps for the better.

(8) Zealots - The Fugees

This is an outstanding song, off one of my favorite albums from college. I got this album the day it came out. Turns out I could have waited a few months and got it on the super cheap as it quickly became a staple of the used CD bin. Sucks to the people hoping for an album full of Killing Me Softly. Also makes me remember one of the early, great music websites: Charles Isbell’s Homeboy From Hell. Aslo getting some alt.rap flashbacks. Lauryn showing her skills here.

(9) Victory Garden - Galaxie 500

Sometimes random play reads my mind, and sometimes it almost reads my mind. All day I’ve had Luna’s Time To Quit kicking around in my head. But like Reader’s Digest says, if you shoot for the moon and miss, you’re still with the stars. Shine on you crazy Galaxie 500 diamond, I say. Dean Wareham was Conan O’Brian’s colleger roommate. As Gary Radnich would say “Good Knowledge”

Any guesses for what comes up on number 10 to wrap up this crazy mix-em-up?

(10) Worked Up So Sexual - The Faint

An upper echelon Faint song. On the Spend an Evening With Saddle Creek DVD, there is a funny anectode about how the Faint’s keyboardist initially was hesitant to join the band - apparently because he didn’t like their songs. He did offer to join if they let him HAVE their fancy pants KORG keyboard. They told him to fuck off, but once he heard this song he changed his mind, and the rest is the rest of the story.

ENCORE - I can’t, I won’t I don’t stop

(11) Jettin’ - The Digable Planets
This off the DP’s second album Blowout Comb, which got heavy rotation my freshmen year and I don’t think ever got enough recognition. They were slated to come to Notre Dame and I was PISSED when the powers that be pulled the plug out of concern over “security”. (A week earlier a “riot” broke out at a DP show in Buffalo). I think they’ll be at Coachella along with fellow domer Ted Leo. Like I said…full circle, bitches.
