Today’s Conspiracy Theory

Posted on June 2, 2006 by Tito

At first, I thought that the surprising increase of Homeland Security Cash to Omaha (and other urban areas) was a simple way to buy some vote-love in the Heartland. But then why lower the amount for obvious terrorist targets like NYC and DC? It’s not as if there is X amount of dollars — so if more goes to here, less has to come from there. After all, this administration is no stranger to writing IOUs or finding money for The War on Terror. Besides, if endearing Nebraskans was the simple goal, why bother with terrorism when you already have corn subsidies?

My theory being that it’s The Man playing his usual game of divide-and-conquer. If everybody agrees that this is adminstration is Teh Suck then why not play them against each other? Predictably, the media is playing along (if you call The Post “media”) launching “BLE$$ED OMAHA: OMIGOD!” with the Omaha World-Herald’s quit-picking-on-me “NYC whiners spit sour grapes at Omaha over security funds“. Forget the fact that it seems Omahans and NYCers basically agree Omaha is no target — now they can get down to some gool old country mouse/city mouse feuding.

Read tomorrow’s new today. During Bush’s visit to Omaha he’ll reassure his hand-picked crowd that they, too, are worthy of protection from the government, no matter what the East Coast Liberal Media Elite may say. Maybe you can’t buy love, but supposing you could, animus comes cheaper in this market either way. So it’s still us against them, but instead of any real or supposed “enemy” abroad, we get to watch the geography wars in our own back yard.
