What To Do in Austin, TX?
Posted on July 27, 2006 by Tito
We’re1 getting married soon at BMK HQ. For Phase II2 of the honeymoon, Monica and I will be taking a road trip, departing from San Francisco on September 16th and returning on the 30th. Our only firm plan so far is to arrive in Austin, Texas on Friday, September 22nd for an M. Ward concert at The Parish on Saturday.
So, throwing caution to the wind, I’d like to Ask The Internet for suggested things to do in Austin, particularly any vegetarian-friendly places to dine3. We’re pretty wide open on our approach to the city, but we’ll be coming by way of Flagstaff, AZ & the Grand Canyon.
A quick google shows the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum. Normally I’d cruise right past that one … but maybe some locals can confirm whether they have his Extra-Crotchy Pants for viewing?
Meanwhile, I’ll try to convince Monica there is no better place for learning to drive a stick than on Route-66.
…also… I’m thinking of getting some sort of GPS doo-dad for the trip. Basically something that can log locations & do some mapping, but not necessarily turn-by-turn on the dash like the Hertz NeverLost gadgets. If it could sync with a PDA or laptop at the end of the day, so we can review our trip, I’d be pleased. Ideas welcomed.
1 I am. Dave was recently “hitched”, as well, for those scoring at home.
2 Phase I being a quick trip to Niagara Falls following the wedding in Michigan.
3 I’ll be sure to check chowhound & upcoming.org, too.

Tito, way to go.
Go your own way, but consider that the Albuquerque (left turn), Roswell, Carlsbad Caverns trifecta is a delight.
Hey, congratulations!
Congrats! I found the drive from Austin to Johnson’s ranch to be beautiful — and I wasn’t expecting much. While I didn’t go to LBJ’s place to look at pants, next door there were buffalo! You might be going past (and Missile Range and museum), which are also cool.
Sorry, you might be going past the White Sands National Monument etc (bad html).
Jo’s on South Congress has great veggie frito pie, and the deli at the grocery co-op Wheatsville has amazing vegan tofu chocolate pudding, among other veggie delights.
