Honeymoon Travelog – Day 1: San Francisco, CA to Calabasas, CA

Posted on October 2, 2006 by Tito

I will try and put together some posts recapping Monica and my recent jaunt across the American Southwest, for my benefit more than anybody elses. What follows is a complete, honest and accurate recap of all events that have transpired, one day at a time. Valerie Bertinelli, this one’s for you.

Date: Saturday September, 16th
Start City: San Francisco, CA
End City: Calabasas, CA
Miles Logged: 407

We took 101 south until just north of Monterey, where we switched over to the more scenic, if slower, Highway 1 South. I’ve been on a couple of roads, and I can think of few, if any, that are better than the California coast. This is where Eric Bachmann’s To The Races got the first of many plays for the trip — perhaps the unofficial official record for the roadie (Rilo Kiley’s The Execution of All Things coming in second)*.

Stopped for lunch along the touristy stretch outside of Cambria, CA, not too far from Hearst Castle. We’d been to the castle on a previous trip so did not stop this time round. I had a surprisingly good turkey sandwhich from a pizza place.

Monica in SolvangEn route, we also stopped in Solvang, CA … just in time for “Danish Days”. I did not get a danish, but I did have the pleasure of a fellow tourist barging into my non-locking bathroom stall.

Road-weary, for dinner we ate at the Baja Fresh near out hotel in Calabasas— verrry good in a non-legit taco bell kind of way. Monica tells me that Calabasas is where Jessica Simpson lies and/or lays. I wonder if this is also the home of the toad jumping contest. This site was chosen as our first stop because of:
1. It’s relatively cheap accomodations
2. It’s location near our first planned stop of the trip for the next day – a Hindu temple in Calabasas.

We saw a curious site on the dining patio at Baja Fresh. A couple had a baby stroller with a dog inside it. In fact, we didn’t realize that it was a dog (no baby) until late in the meal, as the mosquito netting cover was zipped shut. The “dad” (who bore a curious resemblance to Brian Wilson) had even been “rocking” the stroller as if to lullaby a child. It was all a scene much weirder than it sounds. After dinner we thought about seeing The Black Dahlia which was showing nearby, but instead gave up after a horrible parking situation. Our proximity to Mulholland Drive also launched our first playing of Full Moon Fever.

Morale and Rations remain high.

Next: Day 2 – Calabasas, CA to Las Vegas, NV
