How do you say “Greasy”? … and MORE!!!

Posted on October 26, 2006 by Tito

One of the spoils of married life is a re-acquisition of Cable Television — something I’d gone a few years without. Couple that with Tivo and I have a nice stash of shows for rainy days.

To get to the point, lately I have been watching a lot of one of my favorite shows, Good Eats from Food TV, hosted by Alton Brown On two (2 !!!) different episodes he pronounced “greasy” as “gree-zee” (rhymes with ‘Wheezy’). I don’t even know where he gets this pronunciation — he otherwise has no discernably outrageous accent. He was born in Los Angeles, went to college in Georgia before culinary school in New Hampshire. In short, LITERALLY all over the map.

My question to you, America:
Do you know anybody who pronounces ‘greasy’ like ‘gree-zee’? … and where were they from?

Google, typically, sadly is of little help.

Meanwhile, I learn that in a prior life Alton Brown shot the video for REM’s “The One I Love” and was a camera man for Spike Lee’s “School Daze”

It may be a deep south thing. However, the thing that immediately leapt to mind was the jerky brother in Weird Science: he pronounces it that way in his oratory to the drunken Anthony Michael Hall when he’s trying ot make him throw up. I do not know why these things reside in my brain. Seriously.

‘Greezy’ is definitely a southern thing - my husband is from Southern Indiana and, although it’s north of the Mason-Dixon, is very Southern in speech and habit (cuisine included). Everyone down there says it that way, and Paula Dean on the food network - also from Georgia like Alton - says Greezy. Of course, she also says ’spachular’ instead of spatula. And oral instead of oil.
