Friday tunes for November

Here’s a little playlist that suits me. Maybe you’ll like it, too.

1. Erich Bachmann - Man O War [MP3]. From a record that gets better with each listen - highly recommended. This is probably my single favorite song of the ‘06.

like the moon doesn’t mind
if the sun doesn’t shine
the sea doesn’t care
if you’re lonesome tonight

2. Mayday - Captain [MP3]. An oldie but goodie from a band that I still think is very underappreciated.

3. Bruce Springsteen - Highway Patrolman [MP3]. This is probably my all time most favoritest Springsteen song. As an oldest brother, maybe I’m just a sucker for sappy songs like this. But I think not. There’s a simple depth to this song representing El Jefe at his best. While we’re at it, I also whole-heartedly suggest Sean Penn’s movie The Indian Runner (apparently based on this song).

4. Cat Power - Lived In Bars [MP3]. Stars crossing have prevented me from seeing her in concert a few times over the past year, but this is an outstanding song from one of my favorite records of the year.

5. David Dondero - The Stars Are My Chandelier [MP3]. A short song taken from a semi-recent show in Houston. A very good show all together, but the part of this song that stands out:

heard the crickets overpowered every radio
heard the sound of the silece killl my ego
kill your ego
kill all ego…..go, go, go.

6. Lucero - I Can Get Us Out of Here [MP3]. A perfect example of “less is more”. The Hold Steady is the band getting annointed by rock writers as Bruce Springsteen’s indie bar room progeny. Which may be true. But Lucero is at least a first cousin with some Refreshments mixed in. Seriously, check them out.

I may not be the one, but that’s alright
I can get us out of here tonight.

7. The Hold Steady - Party Pit [MP3]. In interviews, lead singer Craig Finn has fessed up to trying to include more catchier choruses for this record in an effort to make them more sing-alongy for the fans. To scratch them into our souls — and damn if he didn’t succeed. This song also has a very nice bridge to the end kicked off by piano, followed up with a guitar that would make Jimmy Page proud. Come on everybody now, “Gonna walk around and drink some more…” (I also like the way he busts out “…..Into Briiiiiiight new Minneapolis”.)

8. M. Ward - To Go Home [MP3]. Matt always has a way with covers (see: Let’s Dance), and he does a great job on the Daniel Johnston cover (with the subtle help of Neko Case). He used this song to kick off his concert I saw in Austin, and with two drum kits this song really rocked. This song is strong enough to stand on it’s own, but bringing that concert back to life in my memory makes it all the sweeter. Note to self: track down boots of recent M. Ward concerts. As a side note, I recently picked up the “highly acclaimed” DVD The Devil and Daniel Johnston and hope to watch it this weekend.

9. Cursive - Into The Fold [MP3]. Kasher & Co may have made their bones with post-punk/screamo/whatever you wanna call it. But dammit if he doesn’t know how to write a good slowdown track. Excellent backing female vocals mixed with semi-distored leads.

10. Neko Case - I Wish I Was The Moon [MP3]. Death, Taxes and Neko Case in November. Seriously. This song (and record for that matter) is mandatory listening every time the leaves start to turn. So. Good.
