Power Rankings: More Geography

Top 25 cities, criteria: I tied one on there.

1. NYC–not just because of Interpol and notwithstanding Interpol, I shall forever sing the praises of my wife’s hometown. The bars are open till 4, the dealers come to your home, and you can find indonesian food and banjo-infused klezmer jazz on a random Tuesday night.
2. Nashville–it’s not just the country (of which there is plenty to choose from), but the hungry musician’s offspring who have the same ear and devotion, but apply it with a punk ethos, and still hungry. Bonus for the 4-month equinox.
3. New Orleans–this is a pre-Katrina assessment, as I’ve not had the heart to go back. But this is pure debauchery, so much that I can’t remember why I enjoyed it so, only that I did.
4. Omaha–the is–or at least once was–a perfectly-sized city, where you can get from a to b in 15 minutes, drink a beer for under 2 dollars, admire the overabundance of blonds, and ask yourself, wow, were the people always this freaking nice here?
5. Los Angeles–as teens we “roadtripped” through the dirt roads of Nebraska because there was nothing better to do, chucking empty beer bottles at passing mailboxes, staring at the stars and dreaming of bigger things. Save driving from place to place, LA is nothing like that.
6. Austin–I suppose had I gone to school there instead, I’d switch this with Nashville, because there are lots of similarities. The Tex-Mex is better here too.
7. Vegas–the first two days makes it the best city in the world, but by day 3, it’s near the worst. Also, 7 is my lucky number.
8. Frisco–I left my heart here.
9. Seattle–I’ll always have a fondness for the granola ethos, and I love Seattle’s international feel, as well as the gorgeous surrounding landscape. Excellent music scene, too.
10. Atlanta–East Atlanta was rocking it hard in ‘01-’02, and it helped me forget about the prior six months.
