another 10 at 10

Since I don’t see the AV Club calling me anytime soon, I’ll give myself the random rules treatment. (I’ve skipped past the Louis L’Amour adio books and any thing by Kruder & Dorfmeister). Join me in counting down 10 random songs as spit out of trusty, rusty WinAmp. I’ve even gone back an you-tubed it up a notch.

  1. Grateful Dead – Rosemary // this reminds me of the time Dave and I road tripped to Kansas City to see the Further Festival the summer after graduating high school. Memories! Form Of: Bullet Points!

    • Twas the first time I drank while going down the interstate (I-29)
    • Getting offered mushrooms within miliseconds of getting out of the car in the parking lot
    • Wanting Bruce Hornsby to Just Stop
    • Los Lobos ruling
    • Waaaaay too much hippy “dancing” (as seen on Dave Chappelle)
    • Listening to Zappa on the long drive home

  2. The Unicorns – Ready To Die // damn i love this band. I’m glad I got to see them a couple times before their inevitable break up. Then again, if Van Halen can reunite, I’ll be happy not expecting the ‘corns to. Better to have rocked and lost than to have rocked without your bass player in arenas around the land. where was I?
  3. Peter, Paul & Mary – Puff The Magic Dragon // Another song that reminds me of my mom. Damn Ben Stiller (“meet the parents”) for hijacking this one. PP&M along with a few other records were staples during nap times. Scratched into my soul, indeed.
  4. Foo Fighers – Fingernails // pretyy much the only song by them I can tolerate. And damn if I don’t love it. Why ask why wiser men have said.
  5. Wilco – A Shot In The Arm // this if from a 2001-09-26 show at th 9:30 club in DC. I always really like Wilco, but I don’t think I’ll ever cross gray line into loving them. Frankly, I don’t know why. Probably a shortcoming of mine. Having said that, I really, really dig this track.
  6. Mayday – Hidden Leaves // another good call by WinAmp. I was afraid I’d have to explain away my LFO & Limp Bizkit MP3’s. I think they’re (Mayday, that is) coming my way again – but that could be just wishful thinking. I wonder how “big” they ever got. I always had the impression they were one of the most under-hyped band out of the early Omaha/Creek “scene”. Then again, lest we forget Moustrap…
  7. Bob Dylan – It Ain’t Me, Babe // this one is from his live concert album After The Flood w/ The Band. I hadn’t cared for this version over the “original”, though some of the country-fried guitar licks do get me going. I think I would love this if I were there, but it just doesn’t compute coming out of my PC speakers. Definitely a living it song. Looking forwared to the biopic with Cate Blanchett playing BD and (I think) David “never nude” Cross as Allen Ginsburg?. As the applause lead to a fade out at the end, I picture the PBS voice over coming in saying “if you like programming like this….”
  8. Indigo Girls – Jonas and Ezekial // Still waiting for Outkast/IG collab reppin’ the ATL. okay, maybe not. Is this song over yet? I think I wouldn’t hurt anything by paring down my rather extensive Indigo Girls collection. 1200 Curfews may just suffice (but damn if that version of Midnight Train to Georgia doesn’t kill).
  9. Arcade Fire – No Cars Go // Weird how this band blew up So F’in fast, cruising way past that sweet spot of getting to see them at places the size of Bottom Of The Hill or Great American Music Hall. However. Their set at Coachella is Top 10 all time in my Big Book of Awesome Performances. The big finish on this song comes off a little short to me.

  10. David Dondero – Ashes on the Highway (show in Houston, TX)// the first I heard Dave. D was maybe 4 or 5 years ago on a Rhapsody “recommended” play list (It may have been this song). At first I though it was a oberst sound-alike. (I know better now, Jeff). I’m glad I stumbled upon him. His story telling is tip top. I especially like the Golden Gate Bridge Song “Double Murder Ballad Suicide” . (Spoiler: International Vermilion).

That would’ve been Hot Rats, if recollection serves me. Good old Peaches en Regalia.

    I’ll give it a go:

The Arrival–Marcus Roberts: I took piano lessons about 5 or 6 years ago from a lady in Alabama who was a dead ringer for Dana Carvey’s Chruch Lady, except less annoying. I wanted to sound like Marcus Roberts. About 3 months into the lessons, we met an impasse–I was satisfied doing major/minor chords and arpeggios, and way too intimidated by the ink on the page to do any of this stuff. What is and what should never be.

West of Fields, REM. I recall liking REM in high school. Then about 2 years ago it occurred to me that I liked them again, so I burned all the CDs a friend of mine has. This one is from Murmur. I’d have to say I’m over them again. A little too whiny and predictable.

What More Can I Say, Nina Simone. We went and did karaoke last weekend at a place one of our musician friend loves to frequent. We could see why. This isn’t your drunk-chicks-skewering-the-80s type of place. Some dude did Nina Simone. He nailed it. I was in awe. And so intimidated that I limited myself to the shortest song I could find when it was my turn. It was by The Who, not Nina Simone.

Last Can of Paint–BOAT. I previously called this my favorite album of 2006, and I stand by it.

Walls of Red Wing–Bob Dylan. I burned the Bootleg Series from this weird dude I used to work with. He was one of those guys whose office is always impeccable, with the few objects on the shelves and desk at perfect 90-degree angles, and separate little containers for each size of paper clips and so on. So I borrowed this 3-disc set for a week or two, and it jostled around in my brief case in the meantime, the cardboard casing getting scratched up. I felt kinda bad, but it was the Bootleg Series…

Wreck of the Tennessee Gravy Train–Uncle Dave Macon. This is from Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. A friend of mine has burned it for me on three separate occasions. He must really want me to listen to it. My favorite is Barbeque Bust, but this works.

Snake Driver–Jesus and Mary Chain. Here is a band I should’ve liked in high school–they did lollapalooza with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and the Chili Peppers–but I don’t think I ever heard their stuff. With the Internet, kids in Nebraska will never again suffer this fate I am sure.

Greased Hairlip–BOAT. Hey, there are 6833 songs on here, don’t ask me….

$300–Soul Coughing. Genius. Dare I say one of the most underrated bands of the 1990s? I think I just did.

Here at the Right Time–Josh Ritter. Got this from the same Uncle Dave Macon friend. It’s on the iPod because I blindly trust his judgment. I know nothing about this singer-songwriter, other than liking The Thin Blue Flame. Frankly, this one is a bit softcore for me. So much for going out with a bang.
