The Omaha World-Herald reports {bugmenot}:

The 1999 study, which was headed by the University of Florida, showed steroids in the surface water and increased testosterone levels in female minnows, “masculinizing” them. That study also found that male fathead minnows had less testosterone and smaller testes than fish upstream.

Terry Mader, a beef specialist at the University of Nebraska Haskell Ag Lab in Concord, Neb., said that there are plenty of sources that could be implicated besides feedlots. That was his same reaction to the 1999 study.

He added that the chances of feedlot runoff getting into streams has been reduced since 1999 with the enactment of stricter regulations to contain it.

with the horrific conclusion

The bottom line, he said, is that sexually confused “freak fish” exist in our own backyard, not just in Colorado’s Boulder Creek or in Chesapeake Bay, where they have been reported in recent years.

“The answer is it’s happening here, too,” Kolok said.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Telegram:

State environmental officials are baffled by a mystery that has been going on for more than a decade in the Platte Center area – illegal dumping of livestock manure into Shell Creek south of the community.

So last night Letterman called out Bill O’Reilly.

And unrelated, you can rest assured that I did not sell my extra Yo la Tengo ticket last week to this doubly-named gentleman:

hi. i’m here with a certain ingrid in nyc and i would really love a set of tickets. i have one for tonite that i can’t use as long it’s (and therefore i would be) alone, but a second ticket would alter my reality forever. a bizarre series of bokonist coincidences have conjoined that certain ingrid, yo la tengo, new york city, and the colors pink and green (together) in this part of my life. i can take care of coloring and the ingrid–if you could help facilitate the whole yo la tengo thing i’d be happy to pay you what you paid plus whatever you’d like. i’ve never used craigslist before (desperate!) so sorry if i don’t get standard operating procedure or something. THANKS.
