WFMU’s youngest DJ was introduced to PJ Harvey, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers–in the womb. Says the sixteen-year-old (source NY Mag):

I’ve loved music since I was in my mom’s tummy, dancing to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and PJ Harvey. As a kid, I had such a tight obsession with certain songs my dad made a two-song tape: “Ain’t Nuthin’ But a She Thing,” by Salt-N-Pepa, and “Baby It’s You,” by the Shirelles. I would sit there and be like, “Again! Again!”

My friends growing up were doing stuff in this new DIY all-ages scene. I e-mailed WFMU off-the-cuff with an idea for a show about that, and after a listener hour and two auditions, they gave me a Sunday-Monday overnight slot.

I would spend the whole weekend preparing—asking bands to send their music, making the playlist, preparing everything I wanted to say. Then I would go to sleep at 6 p.m. and wake up at 1, so I wouldn’t be a zombie. The show would end at 6 a.m., and I’d go straight to school.

Now I’m on Sunday mornings, three to six. There’s something so awesome about being up that late. It’s morning in Europe, and my biggest audience is there. Once during a listener fund-raising marathon I got a $3,000 pledge over the Internet from this guy Frederic from France. He said, “One night I asked you how you came to be who you are and you said, ‘I was raised by atheist punks.’ That comment made me love you. I set my alarm to listen to your show, and I haven’t set my alarm since before you were born.” How awesome is that!

My first roommate in New York was born and raised here. He was friendly, but we never meshed. While he’s likely googlable, I’ve never had the urge to google him. Things had a rocky start from the get-go when, in his friendly introduction to the City, he proudly touted CD 101.9. See, they played, well, “smooth” jazz. And that was pretty much the way things went.

Until now. They’ve switched to an “Adult Rock” format, which sounds a lot like vH1. This blogger was kind enough to review the first several hours and, it’s official: next time I drive a car, the new WRXP (as in “rawk xperience”) will surely be my sixth, if not fifth, choice. Woo-hoo.

The proof is in the primordial playlist (same source):

Velvet Underground, “Rock ‘N’ Roll (Live)”
R.E.M., “Supernatural, Superserious” (introduced by Michael Stipe as the New York premiere)
Elvis Costello, “Pump It Up”
Tom Petty & Heartbreakers, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”
Blondie, “Call Me”
The Bravery, “Believe”
Bruce Springsteen, “Blinded By The Light”
Flaming Lips, “Do You Realize”
U2, “Angel Of Harlem”
Nickelback, “Rockstar”
Red Hot Chili Peppers, “The Zephyr Song”
Killers, “Somebody Told Me”
Lenny Kravitz, “Fly Away”
Silverchair, “Straight Lines”
Iggy Pop, “Lust For Life”
Jet, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”

And has anybody seen the tv ads for some “country” radio station with lots of San Francisco “locals” attesting their love for the station.

Some good news, for a change, in the Times:

WFUV says it has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the New York State Music Fund to support the development of a second full-time radio station for listeners in their 20s and 30s, which will emphasize independently and locally produced music. The fund, a grant program of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, helps make contemporary music of all genres more available and accessible to diverse audiences in New York State. The station, which will cost $1.2 million to create and is scheduled to make its debut in the fall of 2008, will be available via the Internet at wfuv.org and mobile streaming audio and, in the New York area, as a high-definition radio channel at 90.7 FM. Programming will include established and emerging indie rock, electronica, world, dance and other musical hybrids. “Our city boasts one of the greatest, most multicultural local music scenes in the world,” said Chuck Singleton, WFUV’s program director. “Acts like Antibalas, Forro in the Dark and the Hold Steady,” he added, “have no problem selling out venues all over town, yet they presently don’t have a home on the radio in New York City.” WFUV is a noncommercial, listener-supported public radio station licensed to Fordham University.
